The renovated hall in Kemptthal enhances innovation with colorful structures.

he renovated historic railway hall on the former industrial site in Kemptthal, near Winterthur, complements the facilities of Givaudan's adjacent Innovation Center. By consistently implementing the "building-within-a-building" (haus-in-haus) concept, only minimal interventions were needed in the protected building structure. The new interior uses are accommodated within four colored wooden modules. The yellow module hosts the factory shop, the green one houses the fitness center, the blue contains changing rooms and showers, and the red module is reserved for technical installations. Visually, these modules evoke the railway cars that were loaded and unloaded under the same roof for decades. All four inserts are based on a uniform underlying grid and carefully respect the existing structure. Dynamic spaces created between these volumes serve as an entrance hall, circulation areas, bike storage, and covered outdoor areas.
