The University of Bern’s Medical Research and Training Center is designed as an open science building. Its transparent envelope connects the structure to its surroundings: to the south, towards the Inselspital campus; to the north, towards the expanse of the park-like Bremgarten cemetery, where the spatial continuum gradually narrows. The architectural concept is based on a dual structure – a core and an envelope – optimally tailored to operational needs. A laboratory core is surrounded by office and interaction spaces with a low density of technical installations. In contrast, the highly equipped laboratory core stands out with its simple, linear, and flexible spatial organization.
