The Modular W system for Winterthur provides flexible, stackable wooden classrooms up to three stories high.

The Modular W system was developed for the city of Winterthur as a relocatable school space independent of a specific site. This wooden modular system is based on a standardized module size of 7.20 m x 3.60 m. Thanks to its 2:1 ratio, the modules can be rotated 90 degrees if needed, providing a high degree of typological and volumetric flexibility. The highly prefabricated modules function as self-supporting spatial units and can be stacked up to three stories high. A standard classroom consisting of three modules covers an area of approximately 73 m² and provides a high-quality learning environment, thanks to its large windows and 3-meter-high ceilings. A low-installation HVAC concept adapted to the system’s modularity enables an easy relocation process when needed. The proposed ventilated wooden slat façade can be adjusted according to the context.
